Jean Baker Miller Institute Timeline

1976 - Jean Baker Miller, M.D., publishes the first edition of Toward a New Psychology of Women in the United States and England. The book is then published in Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, Norway, Israel, Japan, and Brazil.

1977 - Jean Baker Miller, Janet Surry, Irene Stiver, and Judith Jordan begin meeting twice a month.

1980 - Jean Baker Miller receives the Distinguished Career Award from the Association of Women in Psychology.

1981 - Stone Center for Developmental Services and Studies at the Wellesley Centers for Women at Wellesley College is founded with a generous grant from Grace W. and Robert S. Stone. ~ Jean Baker Miller is named the founding director of the Stone Center. The Stone Center’s monthly Colloquium Series and Saturday Workshops begin. ~ Members of the bi-monthly meetings are formally named the Stone Center Theory Group (who are later named the Founding Scholars).

1982 - The first Stone Center Working Paper, "Women and Power: Some Psychological Dimensions," by Jean Baker Miller is published. ~ Dr. Miller receives the Allied Professional Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Advancement of Psychology from the Massachusetts Psychological Association. ~ She is also presented with the Woman of the Year Award in Health and Medicine from the National Organization of Women, Massachusetts Chapter.

1986 - Jean Baker Miller is named The Stone Center's director of education.

1987 - A second edition of Toward a New Psychology of Women is published with a new forward by Jean Baker Miller.

1991 - The Stone Center celebrates its Tenth Anniversary. ~ Women's Growth in Connection: Writings from the Stone Center edited by Judith V. Jordan, Alexandra G. Kaplan, Jean Baker Miller and Irene P. Stiver is published.

1993 - The first "Learning from Women" conference is held in conjunction with Harvard Medical School and Cambridge Hospital.

1995 - The Jean Baker Miller Training Institute is formed, and Jean Baker Miller is named the first director. ~ The Colloquium Series is renamed Conversation/Colloquium Series and Saturday Workshops are renamed Clinical Dialogues on Relational Therapy.

1996 - The first Basic and Advanced Training Institutes are held in the summer at Wellesley College.

1997 - The Healing Connection: How Women Form Connections Both in Therapy and in Life edited by Irene P. Stiver and Jean Baker Miller and Women's Growth in Diversity: More Writings from the Stone Center edited by Judith V. Jordan are published. ~ Dr. Jordan receives the Career Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Advancement of Psychology as a Science and Profession from the Massachusetts Psychological Association.

1998 - The Mothers-Sons Project is formed by Cate Dooley, M.S. and Nikki Fedele, Ph.D.

1999 - Maureen Walker, Ph.D., publishes the Work in Progress, "Race, Self, and Society: Relational Challenges in a Culture of Disconnection."

2001 - The Working Connections Project is created in conjunction with the publishing of Joyce Fletcher's book, Disappearing Acts: Gender, Power, and Relational Practice at Work. ~ Amy Banks, M.D., publishes Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Relationships and Brain Chemistry with the Victims of Violence Program.

2002 - Judith V. Jordan receives the Special Award of the Feminist Therapy Institute "in recognition of outstanding contribution to the development of feminist psychology." 2003 - The 100th Work in Progress paper, "Telling the Truth About Power," by Jean Baker Miller is published.

2004 - The Complexity of Connection: Writings from the Stone Center's Jean Baker Miller Institute edited by Judith V. Jordan, Maureen Walker, and Linda Hartling and How Connections Heal: Stories from Relational-Cultural Therapy edited by Maureen Walker and Wendy Rosen are published.

2006 - Founding Scholar Judith V. Jordan is named director of JBMTI.

2007 – This Changes Everything: The Relational Revolution in Psychology by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Christina Robb, highlighting the work of Jean Baker Miller and JBMTI, is published.

2009 - Judith V. Jordan publishes The Power of Connection: Recent Developments in Relational-Cultural Theory. Dr. Jordan speaks on a panel with His Holiness The Dalai Lama at Harvard Medical School entitled "Meditation and Psychotherapy: Developing Wisdom and Compassion."

2010 - The American Psychological Association (APA) presents Judith V. Jordan with the Distinguished Psychologist Award "in recognition of her outstanding accomplishments and significant lifetime contributions to the field of psychotherapy." ~ Dr. Jordan publishes Relational-Cultural Therapy as part of American Psychological Association's Theories of Psychotherapy Series. Dr. Jon Carlson, Psy.D., Ed.D., series co-editor, names RCT "one of the ten most important theories today."

2011 - The Miller Family Social Action Project is created to further Jean Baker Miller’s vision of social change through the work of the Jean Baker Miller Institute. ~ The 35th Anniversary of Toward a New Psychology of Women first edition publication: more than 200,000 copies sold. The book has been translated into 20 languages, published in 12 countries, and cited in over 3,000 books, journal articles, and dissertations.
