Laura Mamo, Ph.D., is the Katherine Stone Kaufmann ’67 Executive Director of the Wellesley Centers for Women and Associate Professor of Sociology and Women and Gender Studies at Wellesley College. She is a sociologist whose scholarly and teaching interests include studies of gender, sexuality, science, and health, with particular expertise in reproductive and sexual health medicine and politics. Her work is deeply interdisciplinary, drawing on medical sociology, science and technology studies, feminist intersectionality, and critical public health and health equity studies.
Mamo is currently involved in several research projects focusing on vaccination and vaccine equity, building informal-formal sector linkages for equitable sexual and reproductive health care for youth, and a project on movement building for equitable regulation in assisted reproductive technologies.
Mamo has published several research-based books, including the recent Sexualizing Cancer: HPV and the Politics of Cancer Prevention (University of Chicago Press, 2023); Queering Reproduction: Achieving Pregnancy in the Age of Technoscience (Duke University Press, 2007); and as co-editor, Biomedicalization Studies: Technoscience and Transformations of Health, Illness and U.S. Biomedicine (Duke University Press, 2010).
Mamo received her B.S. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco. She has held appointments as Health Equity Institute Director and Professor of Public Health at San Francisco State University and Associate Professor of Sociology at University of Maryland, College Park.
