The Return of a President: Barbara Newell Visits Wellesley

President Newell 2 1050x700On Thursday, September 27, members of the Wellesley community gathered to witness the launch of “Looking Back & Looking Forward: A Half Century of Social Change,” a project documenting the history of the Wellesley Centers of Women. The first installment of the project honored the founder of the Wellesley Centers for Women, the 10th President of Wellesley College Dr. Barbara Newell. Newell was joined onstage by Layli Maparyan, Ph.D., Executive Director of WCW, and Linda Wertheimer ‘65, senior national correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR) and member of the WCW Council of Advisers. Dr. Newell spoke about the inception of the Centers and her goal to catapult Wellesley, a more inward-facing institution at the time, into a driving force for social change for women everywhere, not just women at Wellesley.
