Shifting the Leadership Paradigm: the Berkshire Leadership Summit and Beyond

The inaugural two-day Berkshire Leadership Summit in October 2017 was established as a direct response to the Wellesley Centers for Women report Women’s Leadership in Resident Theaters, published by Ineke Ceder and Sumru Erkut, Ph.D, research associate and senior research scientist at WCW, respectively. The report, which was presented at the Women’s Leadership Conference in August 2016, explores why women and people of color hold so few positions in artistic and executive leadership at nonprofit theaters across the U.S. In this interview, Sara Bookner sits down with the four founders of BLS to talk about the process of coming together as four strangers to form the conference steering committee, navigating race and gender in the theater industry, and shifting our idea of not just what a leader looks like, but what a leader is.
