This article for Harvard Business School’s Working Knowledge by Michael Blanding highlights the work of Sari Pekkala Kerr, Ph.D., economist and senior research scientist at WCW, and her research partner William Kerr, Ph.D., of Harvard Business School, in understanding how immigrants have become a key driver of innovation and entrepreneurship in the United States. Their most recent working paper that combined several surveys of U.S. business owners concluded that, “though foreign-born people make up about 13 percent of the US population, immigrant entrepreneurs create some 25 percent of new companies, and that number continues to rise.”
