Succession and Diversity Must Go Hand in Hand
American Theatre, August 31, 2017
By Joseph Haj
A 2015 study by the Wellesley Centers for Women uncovered obstacles to leadership for women and people of color in the nonprofit theater industry. The report attributed board selection committees as contributors to these obstacles. In their research, WCW scholars found that members of selection committees were overestimating the skills and experiences of white men while underestimating the skills and experiences of women and people of color. As American Theater reports, leadership positions in this field are turning over right now. Joseph Haj asks, will boards step up to keep diversity in mind during the selection process or will they stick to the status quo?
