Women have never held more than 27 percent of leadership positions at American nonprofit regional theaters. A study by WCW's Sumru Erkut, Ph.D., and Ineke Ceder aimed to know why that was happening and what could be done to boost the number of women in leadership positions. The results of their study revealed a glass ceiling. Women in theater face obstacles on the pathway to leadership and chief among them are gaining the trust of the selection committee and a lack of mentorship opportunities. A new program from The Pussycat Foundation and Nothern Stage responds to this research by developing a network of women artistic directors in professional theaters across the United States and empowering them to address the issues preventing women from advancing in theater leadership.
