How some women are closing the gender gap in Boston’s theater industry

Women have never held more than 27 percent of leadership positions in American nonprofit theater, according to an ongoing research project by WCW scholars Sumru Erkut and Ineke Ceder. Women are often hired as stage managers and assistant stage managers, but rarely are they able to obtain artistic or executive director positions. However, among Boston theater companies, a trend toward gender parity is growing.
