Activist still busy dissing advertising

For more than 30 years author, lecturer, and filmmaker Jean Kilbourne has been taking on the advertising industry for promoting unrealistic and often violent images of women. Constant exposure to such images results in low self-esteem, eating disorders, and depression, and send a message that happiness can be attained by accumulating material things. Says Kilbourne, "The big problem isn't that women or men want to be attractive, it's that the standards set by advertising are impossible to meet. There's a tyrannical emphasis on appearance in exclusion to anything else."
