Beating Men At Their Own Games

Though Title IX, passed in 1972, has greatly improved women's access to sports, most sports remain sex-segregated and not entirely equal. In a few sports, however, women are competing against men, as long as men competing in those sports are willing. Says Eileen McDonagh, "Sex-segregated sports policies are supposed to protect women from injury, but they can also protect men from the injury of losing to women." McDonagh is co-author, with Laura Pappano, writer-in-residence at the Wellesley Centers for Women, of the book Playing with the Boys: Why Separate Is Not Equal in Sports.
