WCW Welcomes an Economist to Research Staff

SKerrThe Wellesley Centers for Women is pleased to welcome Sari Pekkala Kerr, Ph.D. who has joined the Wellesley Centers for Women as a senior research scientist. Most recently an econometrician at a leading global consulting firm in Boston, MA, Kerr studies the socio-economic effects of public policy. Her work has focused primarily on the implications of education, employment, and immigration policies. Research Kerr and her colleagues conducted in Finland on educational policies designed to provide equal opportunity in primary schooling, found the practices to be important factors in increasing economic equality and mobility. She will continue some of this work with the Government Institute for Economic Research in Helsinki, including an examination of how changes in immigration policy have affected the labor market in Finland. Kerr is also interested in expanding her study of maternity benefits, child care, and women's employment in the U.S. and abroad.

Opportunities for Out-of-School Time Professionals

Practitioner Fellowship Opportunities
Applications for the 2010-2011 Practitioner Fellowship Program of the National Afterschool Matters Initiative (NAMI) are currently being accepted. The National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST) at the Wellesley Centers for Women, and the National Writing Project (NWP), with generous funding support from the Robert Bowne Foundation, launched the NAMI Practitioner Fellowship in September 2008. The Fellowship is now established in Philadelphia, PA and Minneapolis, MN and is expanding to New Orleans, LA and Seattle, WA this year, where, along with sites in Philadelphia, NIOST will test a joint school and out-of-school time model. Professionals selected to the program learn strategies to engage in program reflection and inquiry; improve programs and practice; engage in leadership activities; and disseminate program/classroom improvement strategies. Complete details about this dynamic fellowship program can be found at www.niost.org.

ASM-Fall2009Call for Papers: Afterschool Matters Journal

Afterschool Matters, published by NIOST with support from the Robert Bowne Foundation, is a national, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to promoting professionalism, scholarship, and consciousness in the field of afterschool education. The journal serves those involved in developing and managing programs for youth during the out-of-school time hours, in addition to those engaged in research and in shaping youth development policy. The editors are currently seeking new material for the Spring 2011 issue--specifically scholarly work, from a variety of disciplines, which can be applied to or is based on the afterschool arena. The journal also welcomes submissions that explore practical ideas for working with young people during the out-of-school hours. Learn more at www.niost.org.

Empowering Relationships, Enacting Change
JBMTI Advanced Training Institute: June 24-27

JBMTIbluesunwheelFaculty from the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute (JBMTI) at the Wellesley Centers for Women will work with participants to deepen and better articulate relational skills in clinical, organizational, and personal settings in the "Empowering Relationships, Enacting Change" advanced training institute, June 24-27, 2010, on the Wellesley College campus, Wellesley, MA. The scholars will look at ways to work with conflict; forge new neuronal pathways that enhance a sense of connection; support the development of compassion; and alter the cultural-relational images that push individuals toward unrealistic expectations of independence and strength in separation. This seminar is ideal for practitioners, educators, business leaders, and anyone who has a basic understanding of relational-cultural theory. Fifteen (15) continuing education units will be awarded.
