New WCW Reports Focus on Human Rights in Asia
 |
New and Emerging Developments in Gender and Law in China This report is a compilation of the papers presented by Chinese gender-and-the-law experts on new and emerging developments in gender-based law
reform in China. The presentations took place during a closed-door strategy meeting at the Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW)
in September 2009. The experts reflected on the most urgent challenges facing women in
China in the 21st Century; the strengths and weaknesses of the laws; specific strategies that are working; and the dynamics of legal and social change on
behalf of women. The papers examine domestic violence, sexual harassment, gender based employment
discrimination, and rural women's access to land. This project and publication received funding from The Ford Foundation China and were coordinated by Rangita de Silva-de Alwis, S.J.D., WCW director of International Human Rights Policy Programs.
The Intersections of the CEDAW and CRPD: Putting Women's Rights and Disability Rights into Action in Four Asian Countries This report examines a new model built on advancing a cross-section, human rights platform of action. A four-country project in the
Asian region provided the focus for an innovative human rights practice
which integrates the interaction between different social movements,
analytical insights, and concrete political strategies and practices. The
model built on a framework
that included analysis of the intersections between the Convention on the Rights
of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination
against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in order to challenge multiple forms of human rights violations against women and children
with disabilities. This report, also authored by de Silva-de Alwis, is based on the pilot projects and research conducted by the Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association; the Forum for Women, Law and Development in Nepal; Mekea Strey in Cambodia, and the Asia Cause Lawyer Network in India. Partial funding for this project was provided by a grant from the Open Society Institute. These free reports can be downloaded from www.wcwonline.org/publications.
