Women and Sports: Get in the Game
3rd annual NYC luncheon set for October 27th

How does sports participation prepare young women athletes to become trailblazers in business and society? What causes (or thwarts) a thriving sports career for professional women athletes? Laura Pappano, writer-in-residence at the Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW), will share historic trends and recent data about gender equity in sports, and a dynamic panel of women achieving in sports will answer pressing questions during WCW's third annual New York "Women and ..." luncheon. Featured speakers include:

The luncheon will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2010, 11:45 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at The New York Athletic Club. Tickets will be $100 per person. Registration will begin in early September. Visit www.wcwonline.org/nycevent for further details, including sponsorship opportunities.

Would Elena Kagan's Confirmation Change the Way the High Court Deliberates?
Commentary by Sumru Erkut, Ph.D.

CourtHouseThe U.S. Supreme Court was an old boys' club before Sandra Day O'Connor was appointed in 1981. O'Connor observed in a speech last year that Presidents Roosevelt and Truman passed on the chance to nominate a woman for fear of making male Justices uncomfortable! With Elena Kagan's confirmation, we would now have three women Justices. How would this new gender composition affect the functioning of the high court? If corporate boards offer any indication, and I believe they do, the answer could well be that Kagan's confirmation can make a significant difference. In 2006, my colleagues Vicki W. Kramer and Alison M. Konrad and I produced a report, Critical Mass on Corporate Boards: Why Three or More Women Enhance Governance. Our research indicated that three usually represents a tipping point. Having three or more women in a small decision-making group constitutes a critical mass that can transform the way that group operates...
