WCW spring Lunchtime Seminar series line-up announced 

Spr2012LSSflyerThe Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW) kicks off its Spring Lunchtime Seminar series on March 8th with programs held Thursdays through April 12th at the Centers' Cheever House location in Wellesley, MA. Lunchtime seminars begin at 12:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunches, WCW will provide tea and coffee. Many of the programs will also be recorded and audio/MP3 files will be posted online at: www.wcwonline.org/audioarchive.     

 

March 8--"Spinning," a reading from a chapter of the forthcoming family memoir, Lies About My Family with Amy Hoffman, MFA  

 

March 15--Longing to Belong: Relational Risks and Resilience in U.S. Prostituted Children with Kate Price, M.A.  

 

March 22--Youth Researchers in Action: Massachusetts Middle and High Schoolers Assess the Quality of their 21st Century Community Learning Center Programs with Wendy Surr, M.A., Laurie Jo Wallace, M.A., and Evan Wilson, M.A.

 

March 29--The Arab Spring: Challenges and Opportunities for Women with Rangita de Silva-de Alwis, S.J.D.     

 

April 5--Preventing Depression in Teens: The CATCH-IT Intervention Program with Tracy Gladstone, Ph.D.    

 

April 12--Women Working with Women with Anne Litwin, Ph.D., Judith Jordan, Ph.D., and Joyce Fletcher, Ph.D.

WCW scholar shares findings with public policy makers

Nan Stein, Ed.D., senior research scientist at the Wellesley Centers for Women; Bruce Taylor, Ph.D., principal research scientist, NORC at the University of Chicago; and Carrie Mulford, Ph.D., project officer at the National Institue of Justice (NIJ), met with staff members from the offices of Senators Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) in Washington, D.C. last month. The researchers briefed the staff on results of their NIJ-funded experimental evaluation of a youth dating violence prevention program in New York City middle schools, which showed promising results. Former Director earns Wellesley Alumnae Achievement Award

SBaileyAA2012Susan McGee Bailey, executive director of the Wellesley Centers for Women from 1985-2010 and a Wellesley College alumna ('63), will receive a Wellesley College Alumnae Achievement Award next month for her work as a champion of gender equity and her collaborative leadership. The award recognizes alumnae who have brought honor to themselves and to Wellesley College through their outstanding achievements. It is the highest honor given to Wellesley alumnae for excellence and distinction in their fields of endeavor. Joining Bailey in being honored will be Wendy Gillespie ('72), an early music virtuosa and inspirational teacher, and Mary Jeanne Kreek ('58), a physician-scientist and pioneer in addiction research.The award celebration will be held Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. in Diana Chapman Walsh Alumnae Hall, Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA, and is open to the College community and friends.

New webinar series: Reclaiming Your Connected Brain
   
The Jean Baker Miller Training Institute's newest webinar series, Reclaiming Your Connected Brain, begins this week. Led by Amy Banks, M.D., director of advanced training at JBMTI at the Wellesley Centers for Women and an instructor in Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School, the online programs are held Fridays, from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. eastern standard time (EST) and offer continuing education units for practitioners.

The human brain is in the news and with it, endless recommendations for maximizing its functioning. Maintaining your brain should not be a full-time job. This plenary will cut through all the hype and zero in on what to include in a sane brain maintenance plan.
