SBaileySusan McGee Bailey to Retire at Year's End

Susan McGee Bailey, Ph.D., executive director of the Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW), will retire at the end of 2010 after 25 years of dynamic leadership.

"I love my work at WCW and the dedicated and talented colleagues I have had the privilege to work with during my 25 years as director," says Bailey. "I am proud of the influence our research and action projects have had in helping to motivate positive social change. There is still much to do and clearly, WCW's work is as relevant and as needed as ever, but I have made my decision secure in the knowledge that this work will continue."

The end of 2010 will mark the successful completion of WCW's 35th Anniversary Fund Drive. New initiatives supported by the Fund will be well underway--initiatives addressing three key priorities: Achieving Equity in Education; Advancing Women's Economic Status; and Promoting Human Rights and Women's Leadership Around the World. Bailey notes that the Centers' research, program, and administrative staff, coupled with a strong financial base, position the Centers to move forward successfully into the next decade.

New Funding for Work with Child & Youth Programs

NIOST Receives Robert Wood Johnson Grant
KidsHealthyEatingThe National Institute on Out-of-School Time at the Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW) has received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for an investigation of physical activity and healthy eating standards and practices at out-of-school time (OST) programs. The one-year project, a collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Boston, focuses on OST programs which serve children and youth, grades K-12, during OST hours, holidays, and vacations, with a particular focus on those programs serving low-income children of color. The project allows the investigators to initiate policy research that will assess current OST physical activity and healthy eating policies and practices before new national policies are put in place.

U.S. Department of Education Grant Supports Contract Project
Joanne Roberts, Ph.D., WCW research scientist, and Wendy Robeson, Ed.D., WCW senior research scientist, will perform evaluation activities in support of Ready to Learn Providence's Early Reading First (ERF) Program with funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The ERF Program is designed to provide approximately 240 children at-risk for academic failure with the early language and literacy skills they need for a successful transition into kindergarten. This is a three-year evaluation project.
