Jennifer M. Grossman, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Jennifer M. Grossman joined the Wellesley Centers for Women in August 2006 as a National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD) postdoctoral research fellow. She received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Boston College in August 2005. In her dissertation, "Discrimination Distress among Asian American Adolescents," she investigated Asian American adolescents' experiences of discrimination, how such experiences impact their mental health and social functioning, and what factors can support healthy development in the face of discrimination. Study findings highlight the peer-related, social context of discrimination among adolescents, and the importance of developmentally appropriate supports that match the specific experiences and needs of this group. During her graduate work, she also served as project director on a study of social competency, relational health, and adolescent development among Asian American youth.

As a postdoctoral fellow at WCW, Jenny will extend her research by working alone and through mentor collaboration to further examine acculturation experiences, discrimination and relational processes among adolescents of color. Her professional goal is to implement a research program that investigates the complexity of protective and harmful peer and family interactions in the context of minority adolescent development, and to explore potential implications for preventive interventions.

In addition to her research work, Jenny is a Licensed Psychologist. She completed her clinical internship and postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital, working primarily with children and adolescents. Her clinical experiences inform her research work and enhance her commitment to address mental health inequities through research, program development, and systemic change in support of healthy youth development. Jenny has also worked as a Sexuality Educator for Planned Parenthood, providing school-based education for urban youth on issues such as relationships, communication, and sexual decision-making, and has facilitated HIV/AIDS support groups. She received her B.A. in English and Jewish Studies from Oberlin College and her M.S. in Counseling from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
