The Boy Crisis

Letter to the Editor submitted by Susan McGee Bailey to Newsweek magazine in responseto "The Boy Crisis" articlewhich ran January 29, 2006. (unpublished)

"Girls get A's and B's on their report cards, she tells him, but that doesn'tmean boys can't do it too." This closing statement in "The Boy Crisis" sums up a major problem: As longas boys who consider doing what girls do fear being viewed as less than "all boy", even when that is simply achieving academically, we will never provide a good education for boys and girls. There are serious problems that place both girls and boys at risk. We must focusour energies on improving education and providing as wide a range of learning opportunitiesfor boys - and girls - as possible. Helping girls doesn't mean hurting boys anymorethan a focus on boys requires overlooking girls. Education is not an either / or proposition.
