Centers Executive Director Susan McGee Bailey and Janet Kahn both attended the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China and returned with a commitment to bring some of the issues addressed there to students in U.S. classrooms.

They have developed a teaching guide for junior and senior high school teachers. It addresses:

  1. Human rights

  2. Sweat shops

  3. Ethnic conflict

  4. The United States' role in conflicts around the world

  5. Keys to sustainable development

  6. Biodiversity and cultural diversity

  7. Genetic engineering

This teaching guide helps students to...

  1. Know themselves as citizens of a world that is interdependent at the ecological, economic and human levels

  2. See global patterns of gender injustice and explore potential remedies

  3. Examine the connections between global issues and their own lives

  4. See that ordinary people, including youth, have made history through individual actions and grassroots movements, and that they can participate today in Shaping a Better World

Teachers say:

"Well received by everyone...appeals to the many intelligences in a classroom...educationally sound program that allows teachers to expand existing curricula with high interest activities, and expose students to the increasingly small planet upon which they live."

-- Don Simpkins, 8th Grade Social Studies and English teacher, Blacksburg Middle School, Blacksburg, VA --

"The program is extraordinary. It is timely, engaging, and thought-provoking for the students."

-- Donna Luther, Head of School, Montessori Community School, Scituate, MA --
