Allison J. Tracy, Ph.D.
Methodologist and Senior Research Scientist
Allison Tracy is currently working on developing an explicitly feminist approach to quantitative data analysis, using existing and newly developed statistical tools to identify individuals whose experiences are not well captured by traditional quantitative models. While traditional approaches typically require that “outlier” cases be omitted to avoid biasing the results, this new approach would consider these cases as targets of study in their own right. By using model-based residuals (the discrepancies between an individual’s observed values and their estimated expected values, given a particular model), exploratory analyses can be undertaken to uncover meaningful patterns that may shed light on alternative processes at work for subpopulations in the sample. Qualitative research focusing on these individuals can be used to further illuminate diverse processes. In this way, we can work to guard against “muffling the voices” of groups of individuals whose experience differs from the majority.
Allison’s training at the Methodology Center at the Pennsylvania State University and her subsequent experiences providing methodological and statistical consultation for researchers in a wide variety of disciplines has afforded her expertise in a full range of issues in the social sciences. Her work at the Wellesley Centers for Women has served to focus her efforts in the service of feminist ideals. Allison is continually inspired by her colleagues and their passions and values their combined efforts to make a difference through work that strives for a global reach as well as work that impacts the day-to-day lived experiences within our own communities. As we look forward into the next decade and beyond, Allison is energized by the opportunity to realize her lifelong dream of championing every person’s birthright to dignity and opportunity.
