Sexual harassment in schools is becoming increasingly violent and occurring at younger ages. Parents often are not learning the extent of the trend because schools are categorizing sexual violence as “bullying” or “altercations.” Sometimes when girls who are experiencing harassment fight back, their actions are labeled “mutual bullying” and both children are considered culprits. Nan Stein, senior researcher at the Wellesley Centers for Women, says, “Without accurate reporting, sexual harassment in schools stays a hidden problem."
