Students at The University of Missouri—Columbia recently had an opportunity to participate in a seminar dealing with the issue of white privilege. After introductions, participants were asked to engage in a level playing field activity developed by Peggy McIntosh, an associate director at the Wellesley Centers for Women. The exercise eventually physically separates white participants from non-white participants according to their experiences of individual treatment based on race. The workshop gave participants an opportunity to try to identify with alternate experiences, with the goal of having open dialogues.
