YOUR S.T.U.F.F.; Many teen girls shy away from asking questions about sexuality

March 3, 2003

Ms. Nissman interviewed teenage girls from the Boston area and Gender and Sexuality researcher, Deborah L. Tolman for this article about the complex nature of girls' sexual desire. The main conflict identified in this article is the assumption by some parents that girls' curiosity about sexuality implies they are sexually active.

"We live in a society obsessed with sexuality and we're frightened of it," said Tolman, who is associate director and senior research scientist at the Center for Research on Women at Wellesley College. "Many parents think that by giving their children information, they're sending messages to go out and have sex. But kids are really insulted by this. They think the notion that information is dangerous is absurd."
