Fights between mothers and their daughters can be intense and frequent, but they can help teenage girls grow emotionally and cognitively, according to researchers. This is contrary to the stereotype that these fights are indicators of girls pushing their mothers away. "If you aren't fighting in these years, it means she's pushed you out of her life or you've pushed her out of yours. Either way, it means you are not in much of a relationship," says Susan McGee Bailey, executive director of the Wellesley Centers for Women.
