According to the National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST) at the Wellesley Centers for Women, during the school year, more than one in ten children regularly spend time alone or with a sibling under 13. During the summer, however, these children’s time alone doubles, up to 10 hours a week more on average. NIOST researchers say that lack of adult supervision is related to increased likelihood of accidents and injuries. Kids who spend too much time alone also tend to get more involved in delinquent behavior and experiment with alcohol, drugs, and sex more frequently. Summer day camp and overnight programs are responding to the challenge.
