Evidence suggests that new books by black authors featuring black characters may be inspiring more black children to read, thus closing the scholastic achievement gap between them and their white classmates. Peggy McIntosh, co-director of the National SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) Project on Inclusive Curriculum at the Wellesley Centers for Women says this literature serves as both a mirror and a window. The mirror reflects their own lives, their physical selves, their life experiences, and the window brings them into other worlds that expand their horizons.
