Sumru Erkut, senior research scientist at the Wellesley Centers for Women, comments on a new program, Girls on Track, being implemented in several middle schools in South Carolina. The program is designed to improve girls’ self-esteem and body image. Erkut notes there aren’t many downsides to programs like this. In addition to gaining the socialization needed for healthy friendships in high-school, girls who participate in sports are less likely to have sex as teenagers because they see their bodies being trained for something other than sex.
