Girls were harassed at school in Carroll, suit says pleas to administrators were ignored

A federal lawsuit alleges that at least three middle-school girls in Carroll, Iowa, have been assaulted and called sexually charged names by boys in their classes while administrators did nothing despite continued complaints from the girls. Nan Stein, senior research scientist at the Wellesley Centers for Women, said a 1999 Supreme Court case established a duty for schools to protect their students from sexual harassment. The shootings at Columbine High School a month later blurred student rights issues into a public safety debate, resulting in school officials rushing to enforce anti-bullying policies and, unfortunately, often ignoring sexual harassment issues.  Read more
