Hundreds gather for bullying conference
The Ames Tribune 420 school administrators, teachers, police, and students registered for the Governor’s conference on bullying and harassment held at Iowa State University. An additional 250 signed up for the waiting list after the Scheman Building on campus was filled to capacity. Keynote speaker Nan Stein, senior research scientist at the Wellesley Centers for Women, warns that the term “bullying” might be inappropriately used. “Bullying might be an appropriate term for children under the fifth grade, but over sixth grade, let’s name behaviors for what they are,” Stein said. Stein says that zero tolerance policies, which suspend of expel students after their first offense of physical or verbal abuse, are too broad and tend to interfere with teachers’ professional judgment.
