Black history affects all Americans
The Technician A student at North Carolina State, Johnathan Brunson was walking through campus disseminating Nubian Message, a newspaper that was refused by many white students and faculty. It was then that he realized that even now, in 2005, race is still an issue. Peggy McIntosh, senior research scientist at the Wellesley Centers for Women, addresses the issue of white privilege, a topic Brunson began to investigate. In her article “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” McIntosh says, “I think whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privilege, as males are taught not to recognize male privilege. I have come to see white privilege as an invisible package of unearned assets which I can count on cashing in each day, but about which I was ‘meant’ to remain oblivious.” Read more |
