School age care extended
News-Record Sentinel Statistics from the National Institute on Out-of-School Time show 44% of third grade students spend out-of-school time unsupervised. Surveys also show 35% of 12 year olds are left alone on a regular basis. Now two schools have set out to change that for their students. Brush Creek and Mars Hill Elementary schools provide two quality school age care programs. Nancy Allen, Brush Creek’s principal, says, “Grades, test scores, attendance, and attitudes toward school improve.” School age care programs are, sadly, only offered by one third of public elementary and middle schools. |
