All-out coverage of Schiavo wears thin

Media coverage of the Schiavo case has reached frenzy, but discussion of the eating disorder that led to Schiavo’s condition is distinctly lacking. Jean Kilbourne, visiting research scholar at the Wellesley Centers for Women, questions whether these media efforts could have focused differently, ultimately saving lives. “Imagine if all this energy and media attention focused instead on the self-loathing and hatred of their own bodies that our culture generates in women, and the rampant eating disorders that often result. Now that might save the lives of many young women for whom it is not too late.”  Read more
