Nancy Marshall, research scientist at the Wellesley Centers for Women, leads a research team whose recent report, the Massachusetts Capacity Study Research Brief: Characteristics of the Current Early Education and Care Workforce, indicates that there is still much work to be done to improve the area of the early education workforce. Teachers with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education that teach private preschool centers earn an average of $16 less an hour than those receiving the lowest hourly rate at public preschools. Of current early education teachers, only about 50 percent hold a higher degree in early childhood education or a related field or have taken college-level coursework. And turnover in preschools is still quite high—a reported 26 percent of staff had left in the previous 12 months.
