Teens come of age at parties they’re not old enough for

This article talks about how coming of age parties have come a long way—and not necessarily down a positive path. We’ve moved toward a pop-culture, fashion/celebrity industry standard for teenage party behavior. Continuing Research Scholar at the Wellesley Centers for Women, Jean Kilbourne, talks about how parents can deal with this issue. “What we need is a sense of community among parents, not denial about what’s happening and what values are conveyed.” Speaking of group meetings held with her daughter and other mother-daughter teams, Kilbourne stated that “It was helpful for the girls to hear that other mothers had similar views, that it wasn’t just their mom who was horrible.”   Read more
