Bay Area Parent With more dual-working and single parent families in the workforce, childcare options are still limited. After school program availability isn’t the only challenge parents must cope with; program quality fluctuates following its government funding. Ellen Gannett, co-director of the National Institute on Out-of-School Time at the Wellesley Centers for Women says, “You have a huge turnover problem, which has a huge effect on the quality of the program. The compensation of working in this field is pitiful—little more than minimum wage—and there are no benefits associated with it.” |
