The Power of Family Conversation

In an effort to improve children's literacy, educators and researchers are encouraging parents to talk more often to their children. Through school and community programs around the country, parents are coached share family stories and read and talk about books with their children, in their native language. Research on these programs has shown that these approaches make a difference. Children whose parents participate in such programs have better language skills and score higher on reading comprehension tests.
