Reconciling the races must be shared by all of us to be effective

In this article, part of a series of columns dealing with issues related to racism, Bryant Rollins explores two ways in which Americans collude to maintain the racial status quo: “White Privilege” and “Internalized Racism.” White privilege, as detailed by Wellesley Centers for Women senior research scientist Peggy McIntosh in her widely acclaimed paper, refers in part to an advantage whites have in denying or ignoring the depth and scope of racism. Internalized racism involves the development of self-limiting behavior based on the belief that lighter skin is better than darker.
