Athletics helps protect against teen pregnancy

Since the 1980s, experts have followed a dramatic drop in teen pregnancy and a sharp rise in the number of girls participating in athletics. According to Sumru Erkut, senior research scientist at the Wellesley Centers for Women, this is no coincidence. “Sports has a lot of positive effects,” says Erkut. “The group support that can be found in sports provides great opportunity for development and tends to have protective factors.”
