Uncle Sam wants…marriage recruits

The Bush administration has authorized the expenditure of over $750 million between 2006 and 2010 to promote marriage—especially for poor women. Wellesley Centers for Women senior scholar Jean Hardisty explains how this right-wing movement is meant to create more traditional, father-headed nuclear families, and how social science shows no evidence that this will mitigate poverty.
