Dr. Ruth Harriet Jacobs, a visiting scholar at the Wellesley Centers for Women, always asks how long someone has lived instead of the usual, “How old are you?” “Dr. Ruth,” as she prefers to call herself, says humor can help sugarcoat more serious topics. Her message throughout her new book on aging, ABC’s for Seniors: Successful Aging Wisdom from an Outrageous Gerontologist, teaches readers to know how to take better care of themselves and enjoy old age. In addition to concerns about getting good medical care, seniors are worried about being lonely. Jacobs says, “Don’t sit around complaining or kvetching, but do something, even volunteer work.”
