Paper

Author: Sandra J. Jones

The paper explores the experience and meaning of education for a small group of women academics from the working class by drawing on grounded theory and narrative analyses of interviews. After a brief review of the literature, the author presents quotes from interviews to argue that the meaning of education for these women was informed by experiences of class marginality, the need to escape class oppression, and a desire to pursue intellectual work. The paper concludes with implications of this research and ideas for creating class conscious learning environments.
