Rangita de Silva-de Alwis
traveled to Beijing, China in May to present a paper on domestic
violence issues in Asia as part of the Conference on Gender Equality
organized by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. In August, she
conducted a training program for the staff of the Secretariat for the
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (SCRPD) and other
United Nations’ (UN) agencies at the UN in New York City, NY. During
the program, de Silva-de Alwis shared tools and a theoretical framework
on human rights-based approaches within a gender equality framework in
order to support effective program development domestically,
regionally, and internationally, and to help operationalize the new
convention. Akiko Ito, Chief of the SCRPD which was established in
December 2007, is a member of the WCW Board of Overseers. Additionally,
de Silva-de Alwis has been selected to serve as a member of the UN
Evaluation Group Task Force on Evaluation Guidance-Human Rights and
Gender Equality. This high-level advisory group is developing a
guidance document for incorporating a human rights and gender equality
perspective in all UN agency evaluations. She will participate in a
workshop in November to review the draft guidelines and to strategize
on moving them forward.
