Miss Representation: An Interview with Writer & Director Jennifer Siebel NewsomThe Huffington Post The film Miss Representation premiered on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) on Thursday, October 20, 2011. The film focuses on how women are portrayed in the media and how it can affect women. Schnall interviewed writer and director of the film, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, as well as other historians, politicians, and scholars, including Jean Kilbourne, Ed.D., senior scholar at the Wellesley Centers for Women. Kilbourne, who was featured in the film, said to The Huffington Post that the portrayal of women (in the media) has never been worse. “Of course, women are far more often shown in professional positions than before,” said Kilbourne, “but the tyranny of the ideal image of beauty (made so much worse by Photoshop), the obsession with thinness, the sexualization of girls, and images of violence against women are far worse than ever before.”
