At a Long Island Middle School, a Course in What Unites and DividesThe New York Times Jericho Middle School in Jericho, NY offers an elective class that tackles issues of diversity, race, privilege, and prejudice. The unconventional class requires no tests and little homework, but challenges students to engage in honest discussions and challenge their own stereotypes. The class is called "Seedlings," named after the SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) Project, a national program for educators with the goal of making school climates and curricula more gender-fair and multiculturally equitable, which the course's instructor attended in 2005. |
