Getting an early start in curbing bullying

Educators at David Mindess Elementary School in Ashland, MA have begun teaching children in grades 3 through 5 about bullying prevention. Using the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, Mindess is encouraging students to talk openly about bullying experiences and promoting positive, inclusive behaviors. By addressing the issue of bullying with elementary-school-aged children, educators at Mindess are hoping to reduce bullying behavior in the middle and high school years. As Nancy Mullin, Research Scientist and Director of the Project on Teasing and Bullying at the Wellesley Centers for Women, states, “You want to set the tone as early as possible when dealing with bullying.”
