Boston Preschools Falling Far Short of Goals, Study Says
The Boston Globe A recent study of Boston’s public preschool and kindergarten classes revealed that the quality of the facilities and instruction often is inadequate. The study, commissioned by Boston Public Schools and conducted by researchers with the Wellesley Centers for Women, shows that simply increasing the number of early childhood education programs is not enough to prepare children for first grade. Though all the teachers in these programs are certified by the state, many are lacking training specific to early childhood education. Additionally, there are not enough teachers for the number of children enrolled in the programs, and many classrooms don not have adequate facilities. Safety in the classrooms and the schoolyards is also lacking. Based on the study’s findings, Boston Public Schools will begin improving teacher training, adding classrooms, and tracking the progress of students. The full article is available here. |
